Our Purpose
Public Domain Literature Library is an independent ebook catalogue dedicated to making classic works more accessible and meaningful. We believe that literature from earlier centuries still speaks to us, but sometimes needs a little introduction. Our catalogue pairs each book with contextual material that helps readers understand its world, its themes, and its place in literary history.
How to Use This Catalogue
Every book in our collection is freely available because it is in the public domain in many jurisdictions. You can browse by category or search for a specific title. Each entry includes a clear description, publication details, and—where enabled—a reading companion or thematic guide. These guides are not scholarly essays; they are concise notes that highlight key ideas, historical background, and points of interest. They are meant to enrich your reading, not replace it. For example, you might find a guide titled Ethan Frome — Themes and Context that briefly discusses the novel’s setting and central conflicts, or Basil — Reading Companion that offers observations on character and plot. These notes are written in plain language and avoid academic jargon, making them suitable for both new readers and those returning to a favourite work.
Organisation of Books
We have arranged our catalogue into thematic categories that reflect enduring human concerns. For example, Exploration & Survival gathers stories of adventure and endurance, such as In the Wilderness. Battles and Military History — Reader’s Shelf offers military narratives and histories. Love, Family & Society: Texts & Context brings together novels that examine personal relationships within their social settings, including The Odd Women and Ethan Frome. Society, Manners & Change: Sources & Perspectives collects works that critique or reflect social transformation, such as A Hazard of New Fortunes and Diana of the Crossways.
